Wattle Seed
Wattle Seed

  • Price: $18.00

This Australian native is popular for its seeds. It survives in drought areas and also tolerates cold. It is found in a variety of habitats but is commonly in clay or loam on alluvial flats. It is tolerant of lime, saline and clay soils. It is adaptable, fast-growing species and is known to sucker. It is fire-tolerant (when young) but is killed by severe drought. Under severe moisture stress the phyllodes will drop and once devoid of foliage the older branches rarely shoot again. It is moderately frost tolerant and has survived temperatures of -20C to -50C.

Comments Warnings : Seeds from the Acacia victoriae are popular in Australian cuisine as a spice. Wattleseed contains potassium, calcium, iron and zinc in fairly high concentrations. With a low glycemic index, they are traditionally used for diabetics. They contain sugars that do not produce sudden rises in blood glucose levels. Most vitamins are found except for C, B12 and riboflavin. They are high in fibre - over 30%.
