Wood Betony
Wood Betony

  • Price: $7.00

Betony is a perennial that can grow 2 to 3 feet tall. It has tiered spikes of pinkish purple flowers that bloom in midsummer. Prefers a light moist neutral to acid soil in sun or light shade. A characteristic plant of healthy roadside banks on heavy soils. Hardy to at least -25°c. Betony tastes and smells very similar to black tea. Betony prefers partial shade but will tolerate full sun. Plant in well-drained, moderately moist soil of average fertility. It is largely pest-free. It is susceptible to root rot in soggy soils. The wood betony blooms in summer, and the aerial parts are best collected just before the floral bloom. The collected plants must be dried carefully by laying them out in sunlight throughout the summer.

Comments Warnings : The leaves and flowering tops make a good tea substitute. Refreshing and aromatic, it has all the good qualities of tea without the negative ones. At one time betony was often cultivated for its medicinal virtues, though it is now little used. An excellent bee plant. see link PFAF for details.
