Goose berry, Cape

  • Price: $10.00

The Cape gooseberry is an annual in temperate regions and a perennial in the tropics. The plant likes a sunny, frost-free location, sheltered from strong winds. It is not frost tolerant. It does well planted next to a south-facing wall or in a patio. It will grow in any well drained soil but does best on sandy to gravelly loam. The plant needs consistent watering to set a good fruit crop, but can't take "wet feet". It is relatively disease and insect free. They are now being grown commercially. They have spread into the wild in Australia as well as many other countries. In temperate regions they are classified as an annual although they still keep flowering and fruiting throughout the year if they are placed in a frost free zone.

Comments Warnings :  The fruit left inside its papery pod has a shelf life at room temperature of between 30 and 45 days. The berries can be eaten fresh, or made into jam or included in pies. They are not very sweet; they have a ripe, earthy with a richer, more mellow flavor than most grapes and berries. Gooseberries contain many vitamins and minerals including Vitamins C, A, E, B6, B12, Riboflavin, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorus.
