The rough lemon tree is a large evergreen shrub to small tree. It has glossy green dense thorny foliage, perfumed white flowers, followed by rough, nobbly fruit. It is used as the understock for grafting onto, so can sometimes outgrow the grafted citrus. It is very hardy. They grow best on well drained, fertile soil with regular watering. If they go through dryness at flowering time, they can drop the developing fruit. It grows to about 4m, thrives in a sunny, humid environment, and has a low frost tolerance.
