Arnica montana is a perennial growing to 0.3 m (1ft) by 0.2 m (0ft 8in). It is hardy to zone 6 and is not frost tender. It is in flower in summer. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, flies, lepidoptera, self. The plant is self-fertile. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, prefers well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very acid soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

Comments Warnings : Deadly in large quantities. The whole plant is toxic and should only be used for external applications to unbroken skin. Alcoholic extracts of arnica can cause toxic effects on the heart and raise blood pressure. See link ref: PFAF.
