The chestnut tree is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. A rapidly growing deciduous hardwood tree, historically reaching up to 30 meters (98 ft) in height, and 3 meters (9.8 ft) in diameter. The leaves, which are 14-20 cm (5-8 in) long and 7-10 cm (3-4 in) broad, grows well in full sun position. The chestnut grows best in a soil with good drainage and adequate moisture. The tree prefers sloping, deep soils; it does not like shallow or heavy soils with impermeable clay soils, but it grows well in fairly dry, rocky, or poor soils. Requiring initial watering but once established, they resist droughts well. They can tolerate maritime exposure, although growth is reduced. Chestnuts will bear nuts at 5-7 years old and will continue to produce nuts for the next 50 years. The chestnut is a prolific bearer of nuts, usually with three nuts enclosed in each spiny, green burr, and lined in tan velvet. Chestnuts produce a better crop when subjected to chill temperatures during the dormant period. Frosts are beneficial rather than harmful to the trees The dormant plant is very cold-hardy, But the young growth in spring, even on mature plants, is frost tender, bud-burst is later than most other fruit trees, so late frosts can be damaging to young buds. The chestnut is monoecious, (has both male and female flowers on the same plant) producing many small, pale green (nearly white) male flowers. The female parts are found near base of the catkins (near twig) and appear in late spring to early summer. Although monoecious Chestnuts are considered self-sterile so at least two trees are needed for pollination. The nuts develop through late summer, with the burrs opening and falling to the ground near the first frost.

Comments Warnings :  Chestnuts are edible raw or roasted, though typically preferably roasted. One must peel the brown skin to access the yellowish-white edible portion. Shelled and cooked chestnuts should be covered, refrigerated, and used within three to four days. Cooked chestnuts, either whole, chopped, or pureed, may be frozen in an airtight container and held up to 9 mths.
