It is a small, compact evergreen tree. The foliage is dull green. The white flowers appear in late autumn and winter. The round to oval shaped fruit is plum sized and golden yellow in colour with a sweet/tart flavour. Loquats will grow in most areas of Australia except for Hobart and the mountains. Loquats are unusual among fruit trees in that the flowers appear in the autumn or early winter, and the fruits are ripe in late winter or early spring. The tree can grow to 5-10 metres. They are generally drought tolerant and effectively grow in a wide range of climates. They can tolerate a wide range of soils from sandy to dense clay. Provided that the soil is well drained and nutrient rich, loquats will thrive however they do prefer soils rich in organic matter with a slightly acidic PH balance.

It mixes well in fruit salads and can be used in jams; jellys; pies; tarts etc. The trees are grown for their ornamental appearance as well as their fruit. The leaves are considered medicinal.
