Moringa, Miracle tree
Moringa, Miracle tree

  • Price: $30.00

The moringa tree is grown mainly in semiarid, tropical, and subtropical areas. It grows best in dry sandy soil and tolerates poor soil, including coastal areas. Moringa is a sun and heat-loving plant, and thus does not tolerate freeze or frost. Efforts have been made to grow it in colder climates where it becomes deciduous and re-emerges in the warmer months. It can tolerate short periods to -20C. Moringa is particularly suitable for dry regions, as it can be grown using rainwater without expensive irrigation techniques. It is drought resistant.

Comments Warnings : The Horseradish tree originated in India and is considered one if not the most useful trees in the world. Every part of it is edible and for generations it has been used as a medicinal tree. Hence its popular name "the Miracle Tree". the green pods called drumsticks are considered the most useful and consumed in India as green beans with a slightly asparagus taste. The seeds of more mature pods can be eaten like peas or roasted like nuts. The flowers are edible when cooked and have a taste like mushrooms. The roots are shredded and used as a condiment similar to horseradish (this is not advised by the inexperienced as there are warnings about the presence of an alkaloid spirochen which can paralyse nerves). The leaves are a significant source of Beta-carotene, Vitamin C, protein, iron and potassium. They are cooked and used like spinach. The leaves are also a good source of calcium and phosphorus.
